Based on the continuous directives of the political leadership of the Egyptian government represented by the Ministry of Transport to complete the projects of developing and modernizing railway signaling systems for increasing safety and security rates as well as achieving full control over the trains running traffic besides reducing dependence on the human element to reduce accidents on railways; Lieutenant-General, Eng. / Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Transport, has announced the entry of  Banha Signaling Tower, the automatic distance between Banha and Quesna, and the automatic distance between Banha and Sandenhour in service, within the project of developing signaling systems on Cairo-Alexandria line with a length of 208 km, which is currently being implemented by global Thales Company, Spain, with a modern electronic system (EIS), which achieves the highest levels of safety and holds SIL4 (Safety Integrity Level) Certificate (the highest safety rate in the world). The entry of that area into service makes the whole distance entered the service 178 km out of a total of 208 km.
The Minister explained that the project consists of (19 main towers, 15 secondary towers, and 80 level crossings); so far 15 main towers have entered service, namely (Quesna - Berkat Al-Sabaa - Kafr El-Zayat - Itai Al-Baroud - Damanhour – Abu-Hummus - Toukh - Sandanhour - Kafr El-Dawwar - Qaha - Qalyub - Sidi Gaber - Shubra - AL-Tawdeeb - Banha), as well as 13 secondary towers and 69 level crossings, pointing out that Banha Signal Tower controls 78 color-light semaphores and 70 pointing machines.
He added that the modernization of railway signaling systems aims to replace the current (old electrical) system with a modern electronic one, increase the number of trips per day, and achieve the highest levels of safety and security. He pointed out that the modernization of signaling and communications systems includes monitoring the trains moment by moment; equipping level crossings with bells, lights and automatic barriers to reduce accidents; achieve safety for vehicles; and a system that allows the driver to contact the operation controller from any semaphore in cases of emergency or sudden malfunctions. He added that projects of a length about 1,900 km and at a cost of about 50 billion pounds are underway and planned to modernize signaling systems on railways so as to increase safety and security rates on railways. The project is scheduled to end by the end of December 2021.
