Eng. Mustafa Abu Al-Makarem, ENR Chairman, signed on behalf of the Egyptian side while Eng. Jesus Sanchez, CEO of Spain Thales Company, signed on behalf of the Spanish side.
The Minister of Transport stated that this signature comes in light of the ministry's interest in modernizing the infrastructure and signaling systems on railways lines, including high-density suburban single lines with the flow of heavy traffic, noting that the modernization of railway signaling systems aims to replace the current (mechanical) system with a modern electronic one, increase the number of journeys per day, and achieve the highest levels of safety and security.
He added that the modernization of the communication system includes monitoring the trains moment by moment; providing level crossings with bells, lights and automatic barriers to reduce accidents and achieve safety for vehicles; and a system that allows the driver to contact the operation monitor from any semaphore in cases of emergency or sudden malfunctions. He pointed out that projects for the modernization of signaling systems on railways lines with a length of about 1,900 km and at a cost of more than 50 billion pounds are being implemented to increase safety and security rates on railways lines.
It is worth mentioning that Spain Thales Company is currently developing signaling and communication systems on the lines of Cairo / Alexandria with a length of 208 km and Asyut / Sohag / Naga Hammadi with a length of 250 km.
