Minister of Transport Receives Spanish Ambassador in Cairo to Discuss Strengthening Cooperation in Transport Various Fields

Lieutenant-General, Engineer Kamel Al-Wazir, Minister of Transport, met Ramón Gil-Casares, Spain’s ambassador in Cairo, in order to strengthen joint cooperation in various fields of transport, especially in the fields of railways and metro.
At the beginning of the meeting, the two sides stressed the depth of the historical relations between the two friendly peoples and the political leadership in the two countries as well as the fruitful cooperation in various fields, including the transport sector. The minister stressed the aspiration for more cooperation with Spanish companies in the transport sector, since there are especially promising investment opportunities in the transport sector in Egypt. He also pointed to the implementation of a number of current projects by Spanish international companies, such as the projects of developing the signaling systems on "Cairo - Alexandria" line with a length of 208 km, and the development of signaling systems on "Asyut – Naga’ Hammadi" line with a length of 180 km, which are being implemented by Spanish "Thales" Company. Additionally, the signaling systems on Benha / Zagazig-Port Said line are being developed by Spanish Siemens Company. Moreover, there is a contract with Spanish International Talgo Company to manufacture and supply 6 new railways passengers trainsets, as well as the Spanish consultancy office Getinsa conducting studies for the development of signaling systems for Tanta / Mansoura line.
The Spanish ambassador stressed the greatness of what is being achieved in the transport sector in Egypt during the era of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, pointing out that the Egyptian Ministry of Transport is one of the largest ministries of transport in the world that attracts investment with its huge and gigantic projects, stressing the aspiration of Spanish companies for more cooperation with the Egyptian side in this field, referring to the visit of the Spanish Prime Minister before the end of next August to meet His Excellency President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi in the framework of strengthening joint cooperation between the two friendly countries.
The two sides, after that, discussed the future cooperation with Egyptian National Railways (ENR) and National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) through a number of projects such as the project of duplication, electrification and signaling development in Qalyoub/Menouf/Tanta, and Qalyoub /Shebin Al-Qanater/Zagazig lines through soft funding from the Spanish government; in addition to the establishment of a consortium between Japanese Mitsubishi Company and Spanish "CAF" Company, in cooperation with NAT, concerning the project of modernizing 23 trains for the first line "Helwan – El-Marg" metro and for arranging for the necessary funding for the project, where the minister confirmed the ministry has a plan to modernize the trains of the first and second lines, where 20 air-conditioned trains are currently operated for the first line, while 55 new air-conditioned trains are being purchased for the first line, and 4 air-conditioned trains are currently operated for the second line, while 6 new air-conditioned trains have been contracted for to provide a high-quality service for the passengers.
The minister also directed the leaders of the Ministry of Transport to present to the Spanish ambassador a list of the most important projects implemented by Spanish companies in Egypt, another list for the projects that the Spanish companies supervise and prepare their documents, a third one for the projects being negotiated and required to be financed, and the fourth list of the projects available before companies for management and operation in the field of railways. The minister stressed that the ministry is currently implementing a plan to introduce the private sector in the field of transportation means management and operation, noting that the 6 new Talgo trainsets that have been contracted for and the new sleeping coaches that are being negotiated with Talgo for together constitute positive opportunities for Spanish companies working in the field of management and operation of this type of trains.
The minster also pointed out that the introduction of the private sector into the field of management and operation for a number of railway activities will contribute to achieving competitiveness among the different companies, which, in turn, will raise the level of service provided for the passengers, and will also contribute to preserving the property and assets of the railway facility and maximizing resources. He added that the most important other activities offered for investment in ENR includes (establishing a company for managing and operating freight transport - establishing a company for managing and operating tourist trains – establishing a company for integrated services – establishing a company for distinguished company (Talgo trains - Russian A/C coaches) - establishing companies for repairing, overhauling and developing passenger coaches - establishing a company for repairing, overhauling and developing wagons - establishing a new company for repairing, overhauling and developing new locomotives - establishing a company for repairing, overhauling and developing locomotives at Al-Tebbin - Airtrack Company participation in renewal and maintenance works of railways - establishing a new company for railways lines renewal and maintenance).
At the end of the meeting, the minister invited the Spanish ambassador in Cairo to visit a number of joint projects between the two parties that are currently being implemented, which was warmly welcomed by the Spanish ambassador in Cairo, who affirmed his aspiration for these field visits.
