Minister of Transport: El-Tawdeeb signaling tower has entered service as part of signaling systems development project on Cairo-Alexandria railway line. 
Based on the continuous directives of the Egyptian government political leadership represented by the Ministry of Transport towards the necessity of completing projects to develop and modernize railway signaling systems to increase safety and security rates, achieve full control over trains running traffic as well as reducing dependence on the human element to reduce accidents on railways, Lieutenant-General Engineer / Kamel Al-Wazir, Minister of Transport, announced that El-Tawdeeb signaling tower has entered service as part of signaling systems development project on Cairo-Alexandria railway line with a length of 208 km, which is currently being implemented by the Spanish international Thales company with a modern electronic system (EIS), which achieves the highest levels of safety and has SIL4 (Safety Integrity Level) Certificate (which is the highest safety rate in the world), as well as putting such 170-km area, out of a total of 208 km, into service.
The minister explained that the project consists of (19 main towers, 15 secondary towers, and 80 level crossings). 14 main towers, namely (Quesna - Barkat Al-Sabaa - Kafr El-Zayat - Itai Al-Baroud - Damanhour - Abu Hummus - Toukh - Sandanhour – Kafr El-dawwar - Qaha - Qalyoub - Sidi Gaber - Shubra - El-Tawdeeb), 12 secondary towers and 67 level crossings have entered service so far, pointing out that Shubra signaling tower controls 18 colour-light semaphores and 15 point machines.
He added that the modernization of railway signaling systems aims to replace the current (old electrical) system with a modern electronic one, increase the number of trips per day, and achieve the highest levels of safety and security. He pointed out that modernizing signaling and communications system includes monitoring trains moment by moment; providing level crossings with bells, lights and automatic barriers to reduce accidents and achieve safety for vehicles; as well as a system allowing the driver to contact the operation observer from any semaphore in cases of emergencies or sudden malfunctions. He added that projects for modernizing signaling systems on railways lines with a total length of 1800 km at a cost of 46.8 billion pounds are being carried out and planned to increase safety and security rates on railways network lines. The project is scheduled to be completed at the end of December 2021.
