The Minister of Transport discusses with the French ambassador in Cairo cooperation in the field of constructing new railways


In the framework of the political leadership’s interest in transferring technology in various fields of development to Egypt, including railways transport, , the minister of transport discussed with the French ambassador in Cairo the cooperation in the field of  new railways line building.

His Excellency the lieutenant general eng, Kamel El Wazir, received the French ambassador in Cairo, Mr. Stefan Rumate, and the director of the French Development Agency to discuss means of cooperation between the two sides in the various fields of transport. The meeting was attended by the chairman of Egyptian National Railways, the chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels and leaders of the Ministry of Transport.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Minister of Transport emphasized the depth of relations between Egypt and France and the historical and current fruitful cooperation in the field of transportation, as a number of joint projects and contracts are being implemented, the most important of which is the implementation of the third phase of the third metro line, which is implemented by the consortium (French Vinci / Orascom / Arab Contractors) .The French ambassador in Cairo praised the French-Egyptian relations and the achievements made by the Egyptian state in various fields, including the transport sector, which is witnessing the implementation of huge projects, indicating the importance of supporting cooperation between the two sides in the field of transport, especially since the French government during the coming period will provide a financing package for a number of projects in Egypt, including transport projects .

His Excellency, the minister of Transport, explained that there are priorities for the Ministry of Transport, which is looking forward to cooperate with the French side to implement them. These priorities include the contract for management, operation and maintenance of the third metro line (Cairo University - Imbaba - Abbasiya - Adly Mansour) signed between the National Authority for Tunnels and the French RATP DEV company , this contract is to be implemented,  and the Managing and operating  of the LRT electric train (Al Salam / Administrative Capital / Tenth of Ramadan), as well as supplying 32 new air-conditioned trains for the first line of the metro as part of the comprehensive plan implemented by the Ministry of Transport to develop the rolling stock in the first line, so that all trains in the line become air-conditioned.


The Minister of Transport affirmed that he is looking forward to more fruitful cooperation with French companies in all areas of transportation, especially since His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, during his meeting with the French Foreign Minister yesterday, expressed his aspiration to transfer French expertise and technology in all developmental areas to Egypt, Especially in railway projects , and in this context, there are huge new projects in the field of railway connectivity, especially with neighboring countries, that could constitute a fruitful model for cooperation between the two sides, namely Aswan / Toshka / Wadi Halfa line to connect with Sudan, and the Alexandria / Sallum / Beny ghazi line To link with Libya, as well as the Fardan / Arish / Rafah / Taba line project, indicating that cooperation with French companies can also be done in the field of managing and operating the high-speed train in Ain Sokhna / El Alamein after  completing the implementation .

Then the two sides discussed the need to expedite the completion of the financing procedures for the two projects to develop Abu Qir line and convert it into a metro and rehabilitate the El Raml tram, as the French side contributes part of the financing for the two projects. The minister confirmed that these two projects will represent a major quantum leap in the means of transportation within Alexandria governorate and that the tender documents are being finalized for the two projects. In addition, they discussed the latest developments related to the French side’s contribution to finance the project of electrification of the signaling of Tanta / Mansoura / Damietta line and doubling the track distance between Damietta / Mansoura were also discussed, as the French side confirmed that the procedures for the financing part of the project will be accelerated.

The French ambassador also confirmed the interest of French companies in cooperation with the Egyptian side in the field of maritime transport, as the minister emphasized that there are promising investment opportunities in the field of maritime transport, especially in the field of managing and operating multi-purpose terminals, noting that the multi-purpose terminal project in Alexandria Port is considered one of the promising investment opportunities .Where all international companies in the field of managing and operating container terminals and multi-purpose were invited to submit their proposals and offers to choose the most appropriate technical and financial offers for this project, the matter which make this station one of the most important multi-purpose terminals in the Middle East and the in the whole world.
